Flat out: flats for every occasion!

I think every gal over the age of 21 has had at least one of those occasions in heels that leaves your feet numb for several days following. You opted for gorgeous stilettos then:
a) realised the wedding was cocktail, and you weren’t going to sit down for the next 9 hours
b) ended up trekking from one end of the city to the other
c) ended up dancing all night
d) ended up walking home when you couldn’t get a cab or
e) all of the above
… and paid the price severely afterwards.

Perhaps it doesn’t have to be that way, sublime seekers. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good heel as much as the next girl, but I think we often underestimate the potential of flats to complete or even make a wow outfit. There also comes times in each of our lives (a job with lots of running around, knee surgery for LJ-C, severely damaged feet from too many of the aforementioned evenings) when flats are not only a better option… but the only option. No matter where you’re at on your journey to flats, today I plan to open your mind to the myriad of options out there! Visual break, a cluster of flats I currently own and love:

Flats Cluster - Sublime Finds

Flattery will get you everywhere!

I have scoured far and wide for flats for you and I’ll be upfront; a great deal of my scouring has been in the USA. I know people can be nervous about buying shoes online, especially if they’re coming from afar. Nevertheless, I have found the savings and the variety have made shopping for shoes in the States a total no brainer. Often the discount or value alone covers the freight-forwarding if a provider doesn’t ship direct. If you’re worried about sizes, read the reviews (especially good on sites like Zappos – the world’s largest online shoe retailer) to see if the product runs large or small. Anyway, lets begin!

If I could only have one pair of shoes for the rest of my life…

I would die, this is clearly a life not worth living! Jokes aside, if I could only have one pair of shoes, it would be these babies. I have bought, and worn out, four pairs of them. They are from Witchery, this season the style name is Carla, they are $99.95 (there is an extra 20% off for Witchery members this weekend) and I cannot live without them. For me, a black patent flat is go-to for any event. They work with a casual outfit, a work outfit and thanks to patent being that bit dressier, can also scrape through in a more dressy event. The patent finish also means they wear very well and don’t get super scratched up! Witchery’s flat are a great cut (every year except last year, thank goodness it’s been fixed again!), 100% leather including the lining (so they mould to your foot and are comfy) and have the perfect amount of flexibility in the soul to make them comfy to walk (shop) in for hours on end. These shoes are so good they wholeheartedly deserve their own section in this post and are truly, sublime finds!

Witchery Cara Ballet Flat

Luckily for me and you, we aren’t limited to just one pair. Onwards we roll! (Today, the further you scroll the more exciting they get!)

Some tips!

  • Don’t be afraid to let your shoe make your outfit! I’m a big fan of block colours or black with a FABULOUS shoe to set your outfit off!
  • If you’re buying a suede shoe, you must, must waterproof it before you wear it. It’s the only way to get good milage out of them.
  • If you’re buying a metallic shoe, never use a cleaning product on it, even a clear one, that isn’t designed specifically for metallic. It will very possibly strip the colour.
  • Flats (especially staples) are an AWESOME excuse for shoe clips! Shoe clips are an especially great way to make a flat feel a little fancy for a special event!

Flats don’t have to mean boring or ‘sensible’ (someone called me ‘so sensible’ in flats once and I wanted to stab them, who wants to be described as ‘sensible’!?!). Be kind to those lovely feets of yours by keeping them out of heels a bit more often AND be super stylish at the same time… go on I dare you!

Chubby never looked so good!

Short, sweet and good news today, gang! I was cruising over at The Style Insider recently and came across a VERY welcome discovery! Clinique have released a new range of their now-famous chubby sticks… in INTENSE colours!

The Chubby stick originally rose to fame for it’s innovative lipstick design, delivering their new product in a crayon-like shape dubbed the ‘chubby stick’. Packed with shea butter and marketed as a ‘moisturising lip balm’, Clinique’s original range of colours were quite sheer. But not this latest batch… the new colours pack a punch! Available in eight mostly-great shades, there’s a bold lip for everybody:

cliniquechubbystickintense swatches

After hearing the intense news (see what I did there?), I wasted no time on hotfooting it to my closest Clinique counter to smear chubby stick all over the back off my left hand in exaggerated testing of every colour. They did not disappoint! I settled on Plushest Punch as my pick! Here’s a peek:

Chubby Stick Sublime Finds

I’ll be honest; I’ve always felt a teeny bit clumsy with a lippy in my hand… and I feel way more ‘in control’ with a crayon! (Perhaps this is the real reason I’m also in love with Revlon’s Kissable Balm Stains which are in the crayon-shape too.) Either way, the chubby stick is suuuper easy to use and now Clinique really do offer a great range of colours! I’m thrilled to get a true lipstick look in the easy-enough-for-kindergarten-kids-to-use design.

I want one!

Ok! Your quickest route is to your local Clinique Counter at Myer/DJ’s/Mecca Cosmetica or online from Clinique where you’ll pick one up for $35. If you’re happy to wait a little, try strawberrynet.com where you’ll pick one up for $23. If you’re happy to wait a little longer again or have some other online purchases you’ve been deliberating over… consider including it with your freight forwarding order ’cause you’ll get one for $17USDs outa the States from Sephora! (Sidebar: MAJOR “squeeeeee!” for Sephora coming to Australia! Let’s cross our fingers and toes they come with USA pricing!!)

I am a strong believer that a bold lip is a good pick-me-up! Moisture + bold + crayon-shape = winning!

Tried the chubby stick? What did you think?

Got to have Go-To: Zoë Foster Blake’s new skincare range reviewed!

April is shaping up to be a very exciting month, sublime seekers! The excitement kicked off on April 1, when much-famed Australian beauty expert, Zoë Foster Blake released her Australian-designed, New Zealand-made range of skincare, Go-To. After a decade of beauty devotees asking what her ‘Go-To’ products were, Foster Blake created her own, focusing on five essential products that can fit in around your luxurious favourites.

Because Zoë‘s tried everything, I like many other Fruity Beauty devotees, put the Go To range up on the pedestal before a single item was released. The verdict is in and here’s the hot tip: they are sublime finds! Each and every bloody one! HUZZAH!

Go To Skincare Sublime Finds

Brand New! The Go-To skincare range!

Tell me more!

All the prodz have very lovely packaging, super dreamy scents and arrived quickly from the Go-To team with great service! I’d expected they might be a little cheaper than they are, but after using them over the last week, I feel like they’re good value. Let’s talk through them!

Exfoliating Swipeys

Exfoliating Swipeys: 50 pads for $45.95

Exfoliating Swipeys are my introduction to the world of chemical exfoliants and what an intro it is! Each tub contains 50, single-use, lightly grooved swipes, saturated in exfoliating STUFF; naturally occurring AHA’s as well as hydrating essential oils. My skin likes them! It could be because they seem way gentler than a scrub (my previous exfoliator), it could be because they smell like orange sherbet, which is extremely lovely if I don’t say so myself.

Properly Clean

Properly Clean: 150ml (℮5.07fl.oz) for $29.95

Properly Clean is Zoë’s answer to cleaning the skin of a modern day gal (or guy! Apparently Hamish “loves the shit out of it”!)… she who is using many layers of serums and primers and pastes and goo to make herself even more pretty. The foaming cleanser is soft and gentle and lovely as well as packed with more light citrus-y scents that smell like clean! I asked the Go-To team how the cleanser goes with the Clarisonic, they said fine, I tried it out, it was fine. I don’t feel like it’s the perfect product for the Clarisonic, it’s almost a bit too light, a bit like the Clarisonic isn’t necessary to get the clean you want. I’m sticking with my regular (previous?) cleanser + Clarisonic for the morning and using Properly Clean at the end of the day.

Exceptionoil

Exceptionoil 85ml (℮2.87fl.oz) for $49.95

Exceptionoil is a multi-purpose product, suited to dry skins, rough bits (think elbows, heels, cuticles), soothing scratches and calming flyaway hairs! Not surprisingly, it has the consistency of oil, and deserves consideration before laying the tube on the side without a lid like I did (exception-oiled floor). The tip from the Go-To team is pop it in the fridge to help it firm up. Zoë has shared she’s using Exceptionoil to ward off stretch marks during pregnancy and that one customer said she put a few drops in the bath for super soft skins! Smartie. This one smells good too! (Spoiler: they all smell good!)

Update, 9 May: it seems a few Go-To customers have had some challenges managing their Exceptionoil in extreme climates. The super high content of coconut oil and other amazingstuff (its a new word)  means it doesn’t necessarily behave as well as liked. If it’s super cold and your Exceptionoil has gone a bit hard Zoë recommends running the tube under some warm water for 20 seconds or so – don’t manhandle your tube too much, it might crack! If your exceptionoil is super hot and runny, put it in the fridge for 20mins.

Very Useful Face Cream

Very Useful Face Cream 50ml (℮1.69fl.oz) for $39.95

Very Useful Face Cream was the product I was least excited to purchase, skimming over it in the pre-purchase sale and only picking up a tube after the full launch. I just feel overwhelmed with face creams, thick ones, light ones, day ones, night ones – so many creams! That said, I’m really glad I did the double back for this product – it comes out thick (a bit like Crabtree and Evelyn hand cream) but despite first impressions almost melts into the skin… in a totally breathable way. Very Useful Face Cream is designed with antioxidants, including Alma Berry (30 x more vitamin C than oranges) plus vitamin E and other impressive ingredients. It too has a light and lovely scent which I couldn’t quite pin down, Zoë has revealed it to be rose and fig! I’ve used it at night as well as during the day under my BB cream, it left me with super smooth skin all around. I can see my addiction to this product growing quickly!

Lips!

Lips! 15g for $14.95

Last but most of all, Lips! is the jewel in the crown of Go-To goodness (as declared by me!). Fruity Beauty disciples know, Zoë is a demanding mistress when it comes to all things lips and (rightfully!) critical of products that dry lips out when promising to do otherwise! The word on the streets I’ve been walking is that the people expected the balm to be GOOD. And joy of joys… it is! Combining SEVEN oils, medical-grade lanolin, butters, beeswax and anti-oxidants, it isn’t too thick, isn’t too thin and will leave your lips feeling moisturised for hours. It’s a winner!

You can be a winner too!

In anticipation of it’s exquisite loveliness, I over-ordered on Lips! so I could give one away to one of you delightful, sublime seeking lovely-things that have joined me here during the first 100 days of Sublime Finds. Winning is easy! All you have to do is ‘like’ the Sublime Finds facebook page and share the link to this post on facebook before midnight! The winner will be announced tomorrow!

I’m confident you’ll agree with my sentiments on the Go-To range! Pop over to the Go-To website (where they are sold exclusively) and consider investing in one or two (or all five)!

Tried Go-To? What did you think? Tell us below!

Slipp(er)ing into the Cooler Months!

Winter is coming, sublime seekers.

I know this because the world is spamming me that April 7 is both the day Game of Thrones returns and only 5 sleeps away! (#teamtargaryen) I also know this because I swung my footsies out of bed yesterday morning, they hit the floor and it was COLD. I walked around, made tea, read facebook… feet still cold. So I got to thinking… must be time to crack out the slippers…where did my slippers end up last year? And then I remembered. One day last year, I returned home to find this:

Archie's First Hole

Archie Boo, our schnoodle, had dug his first hole. Not only had he dug the hole, he had also retrieved my slippers, presumably one by one from inside the house, squeezed them out through the doggy door and positioned them next to the hole exactly as they appear in the above photo. I KNOW. It was his first foray into the world of hole-diggin’ AND slipper retrieving, all in the one day. I went and peered into the (rather deep) hole and asked him “what happened here?”. He responded with several zoomie-hot-laps of the yard to express his glee. You can see it in his face! If he could have used his words he would have said “I dug a HOLE! A glorious HOLE! Hurrah for MEEE! I can DIG!” To which I would have replied “We’ll deal with the hole in a minute, what’s up with my slippers?” to which he would have replied “I put them there to make sure you’d find my glorious HOLE!”. Very bloody clever, Archie Boo.

Anyway, there was no coming back for my fluffy pink slippers. They had met their demise. Perhaps your slippers were also covered in dirt during a maiden-dig, perhaps they’ve just worn out or gone missing, whatever the case, if you’re also in the hunt for slippers, today is a good day sublime seekers, cause I have done the hard work for you! Read on for a selection of the finest at-home footwear!

Luxe to less: your guide to leather jackets!

It’s one of the most versatile and season-transending items you can purchase for your wardrobe, it’s also likely to be one of the most expensive. It is the leather jacket…. and today we’re covering everything you need to know to purchase, style and care for yours this winter!

I picked up my leather jacket about 3 years ago from Just Jeans. I hadn’t considered a neutral colour prior to purchase but have found  it to be very versatile indeed! Here it is on it’s sleepy owner:

 AS Leather Jacket

Not all leather is created equal…

There’s typically four types of leather used in jackets: beef, buffalo, lamb/sheep and pig. A general rule of thumb is the bigger the animal, the thicker and heavier the leather. Lamb is a popular choice in ladies jackets as it’s lighter and softer and tends to have a ‘buttery’ feel. Pigskin is thin and often shiner, it can look to have a cheaper finish. (An apology here to our vegan readers and a note to all, some of the man-made finishes are getting very good. While we don’t feature any in this post today, check out Guess and Jeans West as a starting point)

Style

This seasons fashions tend more towards a cropped cut, asymmetrical zips feature heavily and the styling moves between a true biker jacket-esque look through to a very soft drapey finish.

Fit

Your jacket should be snug but not tight, especially around the shoulders, arms and armpits. Sleeker silhouettes will be more flattering to the figure, beware embellishments that may add undue bulk to your look. Your jacket should have about 1.5cms of space on all sides if it fits correctly.

Enough, enough, show me the jackets!

Okay, sheesh! Today’s finds are split into two categories; black and colour!

Styling Tips!

The truth is, you can wear a leather jacket with pretty much anything, such is it’s status as a wardrobe staple. The challenge is rather utilising your jacket in as many ways as possible! Consider some of the looks below:

  • Classic: team with a white tee and jeans for a classic look that will transfer from day to night by changing you shoes; flats in the day, heels for evening.
  • Edgy: make a black leather jacket part of a strictly noir outfit for an edgy look. If you don’t want to lose your femininity, pair it with a LBD or black skirt!
  • Ladylike: mix your non-black leather jacket (tan/cream neutrals work best) with a floral dress for a girly look. The jacket will add texture and shape to your outfit to create an all-occasions look.
  • Textile: team your jacket with different top/dress textures like lace or silk to create a really dynamic outfit

A leather jacket is often a solid investment and like a lady, deserves to be cared for appropriately! To be safe; ask your retailer for the best ways to care for your particular product. It will likely include the following:

  • spray with a leather protector before use (it should be odourless and colourless)
  • hang it on a large, shoulder shaped hanger (invest in one if you don’t have a spare)
  • never put your jacket away while it’s damp, let it dry properly first at room temperature
  • look into leather cleaning and conditioning products to extend the life of your jacket
  • if in doubt, many dry cleaners also specialise in treating leather products – let the pro’s handle it!

Go forth and find yours, sublime seekers! May your leather be soft, your cut be flattering and your style be that little bit edgier than before!

Beating Blisters: the Sublime Guide

My fellow shoe-lovin’ gals know, the occasional blister is a reality of commitment to the fabulous-shoe cause.

I got hit with two doozies last weekend during my Saturday morning cardio session (read: shopping). Those following along closely may recall my reference to a blister in the recent post about the power of gratitude. What I DIDN’T mention was that these were no ordinary blisters, they were the world’s biggest ever blisters resulting in my mum declaring ‘holy blisters batman!’ when I showed her this pic (look away now to avoid the horror!):

Blister Disaster

Horrifying blister on my heel. Horrifyingly bad photography of my heel.

So what’s a dame to do? (Can I keep saying dame now there’s going to be real life Dames again? What is that about anyway? Though if anyone is going to be a reeeal Dame I do think Quinten Bryce is a great pick, cause that dame can sure rock a non-black lady suit! Anyway, I digress!).

I looked up a bunch of info (read: first page of results on google) about treating blisters which soon had me sterilizing makeshift needles (read: dousing safety pins from the drycleaning with Smirnoff) to sort my blister shizzle out.

But none of the ‘treatment’ plans told me the ONE thing I REALLY needed to sort out my blister problem and get back into my pumps ASAP… which is… a good pair of slingbacks!

What’s that now? Slingbacks?

Yes, sublime seekers. I’m declaring the slingback the secret to my blister recovery! “Oh but you can wear thongs or sandals”. Yeah, not in winter. Often, not at work. Not with stockings. And probably not with your new non-black work suit. (Two plugs in one post, too much?) You want a cute, work-appropriate shoe, with no back, to steer clear of your poor recovering heels. I’m calling the slingback the must-have shoe for every shoe-addict who has a tendency to put looks above comfort in the footwear department (read: every woman). Here’s mine:

AS Slingbacks
